What documents do I need to work in this country?

As a beneficiary of temporary protection status, you have access to the labour market.

The same applies under your status as an international protection applicant. In both instances, you have the same rights and obligations, regarding social security, as any Greek citizen.

In case you are granted refugee status, you have, additionally, the right to start your own business.

In any of the above cases, a โ€œwork permitโ€ is no longer a prerequisite to access the job market in Greece. However, in order to work legally you must have a tax number (AFM) and a social security number (AMKA). Once temporary protection is granted, AFM and AMKA are immediately activated.

Are there any diploma and professional equivalence programs? How and where do I apply?

If you are a recognised refugee or beneficiary of subsidiary protection, you are treated in the same way as Greek nationals in relation to recognition of foreign diplomas, certificates and evidence of formal qualifications. Thus, you may be able to have your diploma or certificate recognised, however you will need to fulfil additional requirements.

The Department for the Implementation of European Legislation is the (new) governmental agency competent to receive and rule on applications for the recognition of professional qualifications as well as for the recognition of professional equivalence of higher education diplomas. Find out more information on the additional criteria set by Greek law as well as the documents you will need to submit with your application here (available in Greek).

If you have academic or other qualifications, but no documents to prove it, an experimental program may be able to help you. The Greek Ministry of Education and the Council of Europe are running a pilot program to test a new document called the European Qualifications Passport for Refugees.
