Emergency medical care is available to anyone who is legally in Belgium. You can contact any doctor or the reception department of the nearest hospital. Procedures will be provided free of charge.

Depending on the region, doctors speak French, Dutch, German and English. Ukrainian-speaking and Russian-speaking doctors are not known.

To get a prescription, please consult the physician. Always communicate important medical information to the physician. Tell him/her what medication you are taking. This can be important for the care you receive. The physician will always treat the information confidentially.

If you take medication for a long time, be sure to consult a physician in time to receive a prescription. If possible, take the packaging of your medication with you. The physician may prescribe equivalent medication. This medication may look different in shape and/or color.

If you have a chronic disease that requires specialised care, contact the physician, who will treat you or refer you to the appropriate specialized care, if necessary.

For the treatment of tuberculosis, you can also contact a specialized VRGT centre .

For HIV treatment, you can also go to a reference centre .

If you fall under the temporary protection and can be registered as an entitled resident, you are entitled to the reimbursement of medical costs such as doctor’s visits. Once you are registered with our health insurance fund, you can also enjoy additional benefits such as childbirth gifts, dental benefits, reimbursement of glasses

To get free medical care under the temporary protection, here is what you need to do:

1. Register yourself at the registration centre of the Immigration Office. You will then receive a temporary protection certificate.
2. Register with a sickness fund. You can find a list of sickness funds here .
3. If you are registered with a sickness fund, you can consult a general practitioner, dentist or another health care provider for medical care.

In Dutch-speaking Belgium, the Kind & Gezin offer advice and information sessions on pregnancy, adoption and childcare. All useful information can be found on their website .

The Centres for General Welfare (CAW) offer free consultations on all life questions, including sexuality and pregnancy.

In French-speaking Belgium, the "Office de la Naissance et de l'Enfance" (ONE) organises prenatal consultations to provide medical-social guidance during pregnancy. You will find all useful information on the website .

Everyone in Belgium is entitled to social services from the public social welfare centre, CPAS/OCMW.

They provide social services so that everyone can live with dignity. They investigate what help is most appropriate given the personal or family circumstances, and offer the appropriate means to meet people's needs.

Ukrainian refugees are entitled to health insurance to reimburse medical expenses. They are registered as 'entitled residents' with a Belgian health insurance fund.

To get free medical care under the temporary protection, here is what you need to do:

You can always go to the closest hospital and ask for help or medical assistance.

Only Ukrainians who have issued Appendix 15 or an A card can receive free medical care in Belgium. For those who receive temporary protection status, health insurance will cover all necessary medical care.

Please note that health insurance is mandatory in all EU countries.

INAMI, the national Institute for Health Insurance has declared that displaced people from Ukraine can have access to health care which include for example doctors appointments, hospitalization, vaccination, and medical emergencies

Displaced people from Ukraine in need of psychological support can contact Solentra’s - a helpline organized by Vluchtelingenwerk on working days from 9 am to 12.30 pm:

You will get an appointment with one of our counselors for psychological support. The conversation will be in Ukrainian (through a Ukrainian counselor or through an interpreter).

You will also find assistance from Mental health service providers who put in place different initiatives to to offer psychosocial support to displaced people from Ukraine including:

• The Community Help Service , a charity organization offering support and advice including counselling
• Tele-onthaal (telephone number 106)
• Slecht slapen, piekeren en stress?
• Caritas
• Moreover, Each Fedasil centre has a reference person for displaced people with mental health problems and 2 reference persons for cases of gender-based violence.
• Additionally, pilot projects on psychosocial support are currently conducted in several centres in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières . In the participating centres, a team consisting of an intercultural mediator and psychosocial advisor screen all asylum seekers for mental health problems and organise continuity of mental health care.

The National Psychological Association of Ukraine, with the support of the UN, the EU launched a free support line. Anyone affected by the hostilities can call the line. All the psychologists have undergone special training, provide counseling according to international standards and adhere to ethical standards.

Call +32 800 11 728, which is available daily from 10:00 to 20:00. All calls are free of charge.

The hotline administrator will accept your request, determine a convenient format and time, and direct you to a free psychologist. You will be offered audio or video sessions lasting up to 50 minutes.
