Where can I go to get emergency health care and how much it costs? Do I need certain documents?

With the temporary protection permit you will have automatic access to a National Health Service Number (NSNS). Once you pick your place of residence, you must make your way to the local Healthcare Centre and register yourself and your family as a resident in the area, so you can be assigned a family doctor and be included in the National Vaccination Plan.

If you are in an emergency situation, you can call the emergency contacts (112 or 808 24 24 24) before going to the emergency unit of the public hospital where you live. Public hospitals also offer nursing appointments (prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes or hypertension, for example), as well as specialised appointments (with a pass issued by the family doctor or hospital).

Where can I fill my prescription or treat long-term conditions and how much will it cost?

You can contact any local medical center (Centro de Saรบde). If you have already requested your temporary protection, you can get medical assistance for free at the public hospitals. You only need your passport and copy of your temporary protection request or digital certificate.
If you don't have a health number yet, medical center will provide you the temporary one (for the visit).

I am pregnant, where can I get gynecology care?

To access the healthcare system, you need to wait to receive your SNS number (numero utente) after which you can ask for an appointment in your local Centro de Saude. If you have requested temporary protection status, it shouldnโ€™t take long for you to receive this number. Primary healthcare is provided in Family Health Units (USF), called health centres . In health centres you can consult a family doctor, the professional who looks after individuals and their families. You can register at the health centre in your area of residence using your user number. If you are planning a pregnancy or need information about sexually transmitted diseases, you can also book a family planning appointment .

Can I benefit from public health care?

Yes, you can if you have a status of temporary protection. The application for Temporary Protection automatically grants the National Health Service (SNS) User Number, which gives access to all basic health services, in the public system. Any person registered with the SNS can go to a hospital or health center, having to pay, at most, a moderator fee (which varies according to the care provided).

After settling in Portugal, you should contact the health center in your new area of residence within 14 days to register yourself and your family. In this way, you can keep track of your previous health situation and access the National Vaccination Program (PNV) and the COVID-19 vaccination.

What does public healthcare cover?

Public healthcare covers all the basic healthcare services and individuals will pay, at most, a co-payment fee.

You can get mental support on the following platforms free of charge:

  • United in Crisis Initiative suggests free support group sessions weekly In Lisbon.
  • VOS platform offers free psychological support.

The National Psychological Association of Ukraine, with the support of the UN, the EU launched a free support line. Anyone affected by the hostilities can call the line. All the psychologists have undergone special training, provide counseling according to international standards and adhere to ethical standards.

The hotline administrator will accept your request, determine a convenient format and time, and direct you to a free psychologist. You will be offered audio or video sessions lasting up to 50 minutes.
