Where can I go to get emergency health care and how much it costs? Do I need certain documents?

Ukrainian refgees will have full access to the free public health insurance system for 150 days. Afterwards, the Czech will stop paying the insurance premiums for refugees aged 18 to 64 and the refugee wil either have to cover the health insurance payments themself or look for otehr entities, who wil cover these costs (e.g. employer).

As soon as temporary protection is granted, the person can access the public health insurance system, with the Czech state paying the insurance premiums. Any Czech health insurance company will issue the certificate of health insurance โ€“ usually this is immediately covered at the Special Regional Assistance Centers. Official information is here . You should go to the office of VZP ฤŒR where the insurance certificate will be issued to you.

In the event that the individual needs urgent care before obtaining the certificate, we recommend presenting at least a valid travel document and the visa to the medical facility. Emergency number is 112. See Lex Ukraine article for more information.

Can I talk to a doctor in Ukrainian/Russian?

If you have any questions about health care in Czech Republic, you can call the hotline +420226201221 (choose option 2) which is open daily from 8:00 to 19:00; the information is provided in Czech, Ukrainian and Russian.

Some clinical hospitals have set up ""UA-POINT"" stations, where you can see a doctor. These points offer interpreter services (more information here )

Where can I go to fill my subscriptions or treat long-term conditions and how much it costs?

Antibiotics and hormonal medications require a prescription from a doctor. Please mind that most of the pharmacies open Monday to Friday . Online pharmacies sell medications that don't require prescriptions. More information at the Ministry of Health .

I am pregnant, where can I get gynecology care?
  • If you are under temporary protection, you will receive public health care and the Czech Health insurance system covers the medical treatments in relation to pregnancy.
  • Alternatively you can visit one of the private clinics that offers help, such as unica.cz or mygyn.cz .

Can I benefit from public health care?

Yes, persons with temporary protection are automatically covered by the state health insurance, but it is only free for the first 150 days.

Medical care in Czech Republic is provided according to the type of stay in the Czech Republic:

  • For newly arrived citizens of Ukraine it is recommended to apply for temporary protection (in one of the National Support Centers for Ukraine ). As soon as such a temporary protection is granted, you become a member of the system of compulsory state health insurance with access to full medical care.
  • If you have been granted a visa but don't have proof of health insurance yet, then you need to apply for the temporary insurance card VZP ฤŒR, you can do it online at moje.vzp.cz or ozp.cz , or in person at any branch of the CRP or another health insurance company .
  • If you arrived prior to March 22nd you have likely obtained a special long-term visa - this will be automatically transferred to the temporary protection system and you can prove it with the original visa sticker or visa stamp you received.
  • If you do not have state health insurance and you can not pay for medical care, you can seek immediate help for example at UA POINT of clinical hospitals that have been set up by the Ministry of Health.

Free health insurance is valid after 150 days for the following categories:

  • bedridden patients;
  • women with risky pregnancies;
  • people with terminal cancer in need of palliative care.

How to extend health insurance after extension of temporary protection?

The majority of Ukrainian migrants are insured by the state medical insurance company VZP. The company has published detailed explanations on this issue .

After your temporary protection is extended, your health insurance is also extended. A new insurance is issued, which is valid in accordance with the current temporary protection.

  • until September 30, 2023 - if you have received confirmation from the OAMR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Czech Republic about registration on the portal for the extension of temporary protection;
  • until March 31, 2024 - if you have already personally visited the OAMR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Czech Republic and have a new visa sticker with extended temporary protection.

You can apply for new health insurance through an online form . This must be done no earlier than 5 working days after the extension of temporary protection.

You can also replace the insurance card in person at any VZP branch by presenting a valid health insurance card and a document on the extension of temporary protection.

What does public healthcare cover?

The public health insurance system covers full access to health care. Insurance typically covers preventative and diagnostic care, hospital care (that includes rehabilitation and care of chronic illness), dental care and medicines. Approximately 60% of the population chooses the main insurance provider for public health care. There is no need for extra private health insurance unless you choose to.   • Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Arts of MU is establishing a crisis psychological helpline for Ukrainian students, academic staff and Ukrainian citizens who currently live in Brno and the South Moravian Region: please call +420 771 234 434.

  • Vos.health/ukraine is providing free mental support too.
  • National Institute of Mental Health of Czech Republic created a platform Samopomich which provides you additional resources for mental support.

The National Psychological Association of Ukraine, with the support of the UN, the EU launched a free support line. Anyone affected by the hostilities can call the line. All the psychologists have undergone special training, provide counseling according to international standards and adhere to ethical standards.

The hotline administrator will accept your request, determine a convenient format and time, and direct you to a free psychologist. You will be offered audio or video sessions lasting up to 50 minutes.
