In emergencies, you can go to the hospital. Emergency treatment is free in Turkey, but private hospitals may charge for admissions. In severe accidents, you can call both public and private ambulances. For any emergencies, you can call 112. Many doctors speak English.

Where can I go to fill my subscriptions or treat long-term conditions and how much it costs?

Prescribed medication may be obtained from pharmacies with the presentation of international protection application or beneficiary ID documentation. Medicines in Turkey are not free and imported medicines cannot be covered by the Social Security Institution. As is the case for Turkish citizens, a contribution fee may apply.

I am pregnant, where can I get gynecology care?

Foreign national persons who have residence permit in Turkey and are not insurance holders under legislation of a foreign country may enjoy the public healthcare service as per the provisions of the Social Security and General Health Insurance Law (โ€œLaw no. 5510โ€), under the general health insurance system.

Accordingly, a pregnant woman can contact a gynecologist in any public health facilities.

Can I benefit from public health care?

Applicants for a residence permit or international protection must register for a General health insurance in order to access medical services free of charge. Foreign nationals are required to submit their application to the nearest provincial/central directorate of social security institution in the place of their residence. Do I need to register in order to obtain health coverage and if yes how?

Yes. Foreign national individuals who have residence permit in Turkey and are not insurance holders under legislation of a foreign country, shall be deemed to be general health insurance holder upon their request, after completing one year residence period in Turkey.

Individuals who are applicants and international protection beneficiaries shall be deemed to be general health insurance holders as of the date they file international protection applications or become international protection beneficiaries and they shall be communicated to the Social Security Institution.

What does public healthcare cover?

General health insurances cover most health issues such as emergencies, pregnancy, and illnesses. The Turkish Social Security Institution administers general healthcare in Turkey and social security centers can be found throughout cities for registration. Public healthcare can be accessed in public hospitals.

Public health services and their terms are stated in details under the Law no. 5510 and the coverage varies depending on certain further conditions, such as age limit for certain health services, whether the service is provided by one of the contracted health care providers, etc. We, therefore, recommend consulting with YIMER and/or the Turkish Social Security Institution for further details.

Where can I go to get mental health support and how much it costs? Do I need certain documents?

Psychological and psychiatric support may be accessed in health clinics or public hospitals. If the hospital does not have a psychiatry department or doctor available, the hospital may refer patients to another hospital or city accordingly. Such support and treatment will be covered under the health insurance obtained as an international protection applicant or beneficiary.
