Can I talk to a doctor in Ukrainian/Russian?
Where can I fill my prescription or treat long-term conditions and how much will it cost?

It is preferable to get a prescription from a local doctor "Hausarzt", as those are covered by local health insurance institutions.

If required, you would normally only have to pay a small fee depending on your condition and type of medicine.

In Austria, you can consult a general medicine doctor (ร„rzt*innen fรผr Allgemeinmedizin - an analogue of a Ukrainian family doctor) who has a contract with the Austrian health fund (Kassenarzt) free of charge. In the Austrian healthcare system, general practitioners are the first point of contact.

You can consult a general practitioner without an appointment. He can refer you to a specialist doctor, who usually requires an appointment.

In addition, you can get free medical care in outpatient clinics and hospitals if you are referred by a general practitioner or in urgent cases.

You can also contact the health centers of the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (Gesundheitszentrum der รถsterreichischen Gesundheitskasse). It is necessary to make an appointment with a doctor by phone in advance. Adults must first contact the Mariahilf medical center , for children there is a children's outpatient clinic in the Favoriten medical center . If necessary, you will be referred to a specialized outpatient clinic.

I am pregnant, where can I get gynecology care?

Legally, you must go before the 14th week of pregnancy to be eligible for all the benefits offered by your health insurance for the duration of your pregnancy.

General health insurance covers gynecological services, so whether you need an annual exam or something more specialized, your gynecological needs should be met. You can choose your own gynecologist โ€“ just be sure that they accept your insurance. Once you have found someone you like, you will need to register with that office so that your services and insurance processing go through it.

Pregnant women are entitled to medical assistance, assistance from certified pediatric and infant nurses, as well as necessary remedies and care in a hospital.

Here you can find a list of gynecologists in Austria.

Can I benefit from public health care?

Ukrainians who have obtained temporary protection in Austria have the right to access medical services: to receive a doctor's consultation and free medicines. Registration is carried out when applying for social services. After registration, you will be assigned an insurance number.

Everyone who lives in Vienna must have health insurance. Its availability is confirmed by an insurance number and an electronic card. People who fled to Austria from Ukraine, registered with the police and receive support for meeting basic life needs (Grundversorgung), are issued an insurance number and a certificate for the replacement of an electronic card (e-card-Ersatzbeleg).

If you need medical assistance, you can also get an e-card replacement certificate (e-card-Ersatzbeleg) in person at ร–GK customer service points if you already have an insurance number.

If you have already received a certificate for the replacement of an electronic card (e-card-Ersatzbeleg), please take it and your identity card with you when visiting a doctor, clinic or hospital. If you haven't received it yet, please take your ID card. You can find more detailed information at the link .

If you do not know your social security number or have not received it, you can contact us at vsstamm@oegk.at. To find out your social security number, you must provide your first name, last name and date of birth in the letter, as well as send a copy of your ID and a scanned signature.

With e-card-Ersatzbeleg you will be entitled to free medical assistance, remedies, aids and appliances, therapeutic treatment, clinical-psychological diagnostics, ambulance and rescue transport as well as institutional care and medical home nursing.

Do I need to register in order to obtain health coverage and if yes how?

If you are planning to stay in Austria, you would need to register for a health insurance plan.
Initial registration is done by the police at police stations or at special reception or registration centres. Once you are registered, you will receive a residence card and an e-card replacement voucher (e-card-Ersatzbeleg), which can be used to obtain health insurance benefits.

As long as you do not have an insurance number or an e-card replacement voucher, you can use your passport to identify yourself as Ukrainian at a doctor's office. If you have a different citizenship but have a refugee status in Ukraine, you would need to provide additional documents to prove it. The doctor will make a copy of the passport and record your data (name, date of birth, citizenship). After that, the medical treatment will be provided.

Please note that health insurance is mandatory in all EU countries.
